2025
Annual General Meeting, Williams, November 2025

In November, Wirlomin members travelled to Williams to participate at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Wirlomin New Books Launch Event, Perth, October 2025

In October, we launched two new Wirlomin picture books at John Curtin Gallery in Perth. Introduced by Trish Ryder, Kim Scott and Cass Lynch presented Ngalak Yongka Miyak Koorliny and Wirrawooliny that are both now available to purchase through UWA Publishing (see our Books page). It was great to have our Elders Iris Woods, Graeme Miniter, Olivia Roberts, and other family members join for the book launch. A book launch will be held in Albany in early 2026.

Wirlomin singers with Kim Scott at Totally Lit Festival, Fremantle, September 2025

In September, Kim Scott was invited to give the opening keynote presentation at the Totally Lit Festival in Fremantle. He was joined by Wirlomin singers Gaye Roberts, Olivia Roberts, Darryl Williams, Boydan Coyne, and Boyd Stokes as they sang some Wirlomin songs together as part of the presentation.

Also in September, Kim Scott, Gaye Roberts, Darryl Williams, and Boydan Coyne sang some Wirlomin songs at the Wagyl Kaip NAIDOC Week event in Albany. 

Research presentation at Curtin University, Perth, September 2025

In September, Kim Scott gave a research presentation at the Directions and Destinations Research Conference held at Curtin University. He talked about the Wirlomin collaborative process for writing and illustrating our picture books.

Recording Stories with Darryl Williams, Albany, August 2025

In August 2025, a group of family members gathered at the Mount Melville Reserve in Albany, to hear stories from Uncle Darryl Williams and make recordings of what it was like to live on the reserve.

Wirlomin Storytelling Session, Perth, July 2025

In July 2025, following an introduction by Wirlomin member and John Curtin Gallery staff member, Trish Ryder, Cass Lynch and Kim Scott gave a presentation and read from Dwoort Baal Kaat at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth.

In NAIDOC Week in early July 2025, Kim Scott gave a presentation, reading from his books and talking about Wirlomin books and activities, at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth.

Wirlomin Illustration Exhibition, Perth, July to October 2025

From July to October 2025, there was an exhibition of Wirlomin illustrations at John Curtin Gallery in Perth. Mamang-miyel-ang Djinang / Seeing with the whale’s eye, showed illustrations from three Wirlomin books: Mamang, Ngaawily Nop and Noorn.

Presentations for Reconciliation Week, Perth, May 2025

In Reconciliation Week in late May, Aunty Connie Moses and Committee Member Cass Lynch gave two presentations about Wirlomin to staff at Water Corporation in Perth.

Song workshop and recording, Wilyun Pools Farm, May 2025

In May, Wirlomin singers came to a song workshop at Wilyun Pools Farm. Rachael Colmer joined us as a guest and some songs were recorded so that they can be shared by Wirlomin members through the Members Only section on the website.

Song workshop and recording, Clontarf Aboriginal College, Perth, October 2024

In October, Wirlomin members came to a workshop at Clontarf Aboriginal College which was filmed in collaboration with Fremantle Football Club and Curtin University for the Yoowarl Koorl Project.

Handover event, Wilyun Pools Farm, September 2024

In September, Wirlomin members gathered at Wilyun Pools Farm with the previous farm owners and organisations who have supported the transition of the farm management to Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories.

In August, Wirlomin members got together at Wilyun Pools Farm to work on illustrations for a new Wirlomin book.

Visit to Mamang site at Frenchman’s Bay, Albany, June 2024

On 8 June, Wirlomin members visited the Mamang site at Frenchman’s Bay, and spent some time sharing stories. We filmed members pronouncing key words from Mamang on site. The footage has gone into the production of a short film that will become a Wirlomin digital resource in future.

Exhibition of Wirlomin art works hosted at Albany Town Hall, June 2024

On 7 June, Wirlomin members came together for an exhibition launch of Wirlomin book illustrations created by members. The exhibition was held at the Albany Town Hall and the illustrations are now being cared for by the Albany Library. Some members performed songs at the launch.

Mamang story workshop, Albany, June 2024

On 7 June, Wirlomin members came together for a workshop to discuss Mamang stories and to prepare for a resources video shoot for the re-work of the book.

Family film night, Albany, June 2024

On 6 June, Wirlomin Committee and Cultural Elders came together for a film night to watch edited films from the archives.

New story presentations, Albany, October 2023

In October we held a family event in Albany where we presented drafts of three revitalised stories that have been passed down from the Elders. We handed out a printed copy of one of them, ‘Wirrawoorliny/Whirlwind’, to the members present to take home and share with their families.

Festival of Voice Performance, Denmark, June 2023

After the Chosen workshop the day before, a group of us travelled to Denmark to present as part of the Festival of Voice. Our presentation involved reading and showing illustrations from a number of Wirlomin stories, and singing songs linked to those stories.

Chosen: Stories & Songs, Albany, June 2023

In early June, Wirlomin members from Perth and Albany came together for a full day workshop, telling stories, singing, learning and sharing culture. The workshop was preparation for a presentation at the Denmark Festival of Voice the following day.

Illustration and presentation skills workshops, Albany, April 2023

In April, we held illustration workshops in Albany to begin development of three new Wirlomin books. We gathered at Gilcreek Scout Camp next to the King River in Albany where we shared the songs and stories that inspire the new books. Noongar and Ait Koedal illustrator Tyrown Waigana facilitated the art sessions.

The next day some members stayed for a workshop on what we could do as presenters for festivals and other occasions, practicing reading Wirlomin stories to an audience.

Kayang Walk, Fitzgerald National Park, March 2023

In March, a group of Wirlomin members camped in the Fitzgerald River National Park to commemorate our late matriarch Hazel Brown, a new annual event we’re calling the ‘Kayang Walk’. We yarned up stories around the fire and enjoyed being together on Country.

Chosen: Metro family and Elders, Albany, October 2022
Community presentation, Hopetoun, September 2022

In mid-September a group of us travelled to Hopetoun to present as part of the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show. Our presentation was called ‘Songlines in the Fitz’, and it involved showing an animated map that follows the Dwoort Baal Kaat story, the dogs who turn into seals. We also sung two songs associated with that story and then took a bus of VIP’s to one of the Dwoort Baal Kaat locations and did a smoking ceremony. To wrap up we had lunch together back in Hopetoun. This event was part of our partnership with South Coast Natural Resources Management.

Community workshop, Albany, August 2022

In August we got together to talk through the presentation at the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show in September. We sang some songs together to practice for the presentation.
